E.ON Men's Championship Group B: OSC overwhelm city rivals while DVSE win in Kap

The race for qualification to the upper section of the intermediate stage of the Hungarian national league's top division is beginning to hot up and therefore the points that Debrecen, Szolnok, Miskolc and OSC gained in Kaposvár, Tatabánya, Vasas and Újpest respectively could turn out to be very important.

Zivko Gocic's Szolnok team will travel to Italy at the weekend for the 2nd round of the Champions League group stage but first they had league matters to attend to in the form of opponents Tatabánya. Attend to this they did, and in style, taking the first quarter 4-0 and holding 7-1 half-time lead. Their dominance continued in the third period with a 2-0 success but the hosts gained a measure of respect with a 3-2 final-quarter triumph to leave the final score at 11-4 in Szolnok's favour.

Elsewhere, Vasas' defeat to Debrecen last time out meant that the Budapest were determined to make amends and surprise their next opponents Miskolc. Initially, it seemed as if they had every chance of making that happen, Márton Halek's free-throw putting Vasas in the lead and although Alex Bowen equalised, Domonkos Sélley Rauscher re-establised the advantage. Miskolc equalised late on in the first quarter to leave the scores at 2-2 at the first break.

Vasas held their own in the second period too, only losing that quarter 3-2, but Miskolc took control of the match in the second half and ultimately eased to a 12-6 victory. In Kaposvár, Debrecen stayed just ahead of their rivals in each of the firt three quarters and despite a late recovery from the hosts, still managed to secure an 11-8 victory away from home. The final match of the round came in the Komjádi swimming pool as OSC prevailed in a Budapest derby against UVSE with a minimum of fuss, Nemanja Ubovic scoring four and Balázs Erdélyi, Gergő Kovács and Márton Tóth each completing hat-tricks in a 22-3 demolition job.
