Debrecen may not have led at home to Ferencváros but they did make things difficult for their more-fancied opponents. Zsolt Varga’s Ferencváros led 5-2 after the second quarter, then 7-3 and 8-4, but were made to sweat for the points in the end. Tamás Varga’s Debrecen began to claw their way back into the match, Árpád Babay and then Márk Kállay scoring action goals and with 3:45 left on the clock they were only two goals behind. Márton Lévai continued to defend his goal well (he finished with a 64% shot/save ratio) and the hosts did grab another goal with 46 seconds left to play through Máté Süveges. Ferencváros attacked cleverly with their centres Márton Tóth, Aidan Roach and Marko Csuk and goalkeeper Soma Vogel (61%) played particularly well too.
Miskolc proved the stronger in the meeting of the two promoted sides. Tatabánya were holding them 1-1 at the end of the first quarter but the home side soon began to find their groove and with Milos Milcsics in fine form, ran up a 3-0 lead in the second period. József Sike’s charges continued to guard their lead and secured the three league points. Both goalkeepers had a save percentage above 50% - Viktor Bendes with 56% and Stefan Zivojinovics with 55%.
Szentes performed very well against reigning champions Szolnok for much of the game, only to lose the final quarter by three goals. In the first three periods they were neck and neck with their opponents who had beaten Italians Pro Recco in the Champions League in midweek. Attila Decker saved 9 of the 19 shots aimed at his goal (50%) while Dénes Varga ran the show, scoring 6 goals from 7 shots.
Vasas and Honvéd shared the points in a fiercely contested encounter. László Földi’s side led 3-1 and 5-3, but after Sándor Illés had won and then scored a 19th minute penalty, Lajos Vad’s team turned the game around to lead 7-6. The visitors wouldn’t be ahead for long, Henrik Simon scoring while his team held a man-advantage then Jovan Saric finding the net from open play. Honvéd once again turned the match around, before it was Vasas’ time to seize the lead. The 11-11 score was settled some 38 seconds before the end when Barnabás Steinmetz scored with an action goal. Vasas played to win right until the very end but Gergely Kardos pulled off a save from Tamás Gyárfás, who had already scored a hat-trick, then Gergely Kiss blocked Saric’s attempt.
In the closing match of the day at the Hajós Alfréd, OSC were straight out of the blocks and, led by Bence Bátori, didn’t give UVSE much of a chance. The home team rallied to come back to 5-7 down, but as per the form book Balázs Vincze’s side – which, we shouldn’t forget, has six points in the Champions League – ran out 15-7 winners.
